Condolences

Condolence From: Rosalie and Bernard Jaffe
Condolence: I have always admired Norma and had a very special part of my heart captured by her. Through the years, we have gone from just being related to being related as very dear friends. Her creativeness and ability to touch our lives has been very special. I will miss all of our little talks filled with her wisdom and just the right way of making our conversations meaningful. She always has kept me up to date on Emily and Andrew as well as the difficult times facing her. Norma always had a positive outlook and way of looking at life. Looking around, as I sit here, I notice the silk painting she gave me, and remember her telling me how to frame it...in a a hoop. I think of her often and wear some of her lovely creations proudly. Remembering back many years ago, her parents, Aunt Essie and Uncle Mac would be so excited waiting for her visits with Emily.....Lots of fun memories such as the time I drove the city wise Norma through a car wash in Miami.....I thought she was so worldly, yet we laughed hysterically because she had never been through one. Dearest Norma you will be with us always.

Condolence: Norma was a bright spirit at Tai Chi class, really unbelievably so during the recent months. I always think of her when I see colors.
She had a wonderful enjoyment of color and dressed with such joy.

Condolence From: Julie Berman
Condolence: “I have painted at the alliance for over 15 years and want the Alliance to continue to be a robust institution with heart, not what the renovation plans suggest.” (Norma Lauring, 2011). I met Norma at the Educational Alliance on the Lower East Side. I should say I met Norma BECAUSE of the Educational Alliance and its short-sighted decision to essentially destroy the essence and spirit of its famed 100+ year old Art School. I and some other students from the black and white photography classes (a discipline EA planned to discontinue after the slated renovations to the Art School) formed the “Organizing Committee 2 Save the Art School” (or “oc2sas”) and Norma was one of the first painters to join us. Despite battling "medical issues" (as she put it), Norma was always a steadfast and active supporter of oc2sas. She was a sweetheart and despite an oft-repeated claim that she knew nothing about organizing, she was up for whatever we proposed be it handing out postcards at the Chaim Gross museum, coming to strategy meetings, or standing in front of EA in the chilly rain with a "Shame" sign held high. I will miss her warm spirit and I will miss her jewelry (which always reminded me of my own mother) and I will miss her standard sign-off to emails which I'll borrow from now…"In art and peace,” Julie Berman

Condolence From: Anne Stanner
Condolence: I became acquainted with Norma and her husband Herb many years ago through a mutual friend but got to know her much better about two years ago when she invited me to join an art group that she was starting in her home. She had also become a neighbor, having moved into “my” building several months earlier. The group met monthly and we explored a wide range of art activities and discussion. Norma was a wonderful hostess and always supplied great refreshments & desserts, but mostly she was full of creative ideas for us to work on and wise conversation. She never complained about her health or anything else and remained upbeat, even though her condition was deteriorating. As she became weaker due to surgery and more frequent chemo, and she wanted to conserve her energy, the art meetings ceased last summer. During a conversation, we discovered that we both loved Scrabble, so in February we got together in my apartment to have supper and play, along with my husband George. It was an exciting game, with scores running neck and neck, but Norma won. This was the last time we saw her. I am very saddened at her loss and shall miss her great spirit.

Condolence: Norma was in my tai chi group. I admired her greatly for always being upbeat and friendly and for having a sense of humor, in spite of what she was going through.

Condolence: I met Norma when we both worked in the Child Psychiatry Dept. at St. Luke's Hospital in the seventies. We became friends and I kept up with her over the next three decades. Norma was always an independent spirit who spoke up for what she believed in. I remember her taking store and restaurant staff to task in the eary days of feminism for referring to her as "honey". She made an independent life for herself after Herb died and pursued the art that was so meaningful to her. Norma's life was cut too short by illness but she made the most of the years after her diagnosis. I'll miss her warmth and her spirit.
